How we identified cost reductions in raw materials without compromising design specifications.
Our customer is a precision engineering business supporting the aerospace, transport, energy and medical industries.
A key specialist of theirs is the supply of premium quality, precision-engineered spare parts to the aviation sector, in particular Boeing and Airbus.
For this project, they approached us to support them with potential cost reductions in raw material whilst maintaining key design requirements such as superior cleanliness and fatigue resistance.
Using our knowledge of the capabilities of our long standing, high quality steel producers we developed an air-melted steel specification which was capable of meeting the requirements for this application.
Further testing was carried out on the raw material to prove the material’s quality as dictated by the client. The results of which proved the performance criteria for the client.
The client’s cost saving on utilising an air melted produced in lieu of a remelted product was significant, with no concession to the design criteria for the application.
“This is a strong example of how we can use our extensive supply networks to source modified grades for specialist applications, conduct extensive material testing before commissioning, and yield cost savings for the customer.”
